| Science at the St. Mary of the Lake Middle School further develops
the skills and concepts students have learned in their elementary
education. The content of the curriculum is based on the Minnesota
State Science standards.
Integral to our study of science is developing and refining an
understanding and application of the scientific method. The processes
of observation, questioning, testing, and analyzing data are continually
practiced in the activities with which the students are involved.
Incorporated throughout the curriculum are critical life skills
such as effective communication, problem-solving, organization,
record-keeping and note-taking, teamwork, and time and resource
management. Tools used to present these concepts and skills include
teacher-led instruction, field trip experiences, text from a variety
of sources, and student-based activities and projects.
Each grade level focuses on one main branch of science:
Sixth Grade: Earth Science (e.g. meteorology, astronomy, geology)
Seventh Grade: Life Science (e.g. biology, ecology)
Eighth Grade: Physical Science (e.g. motion and forces, chemistry,
sound, light)
As a Catholic community, it is also important to educate students
about their role as stewards of the Earth. Each grade level integrates
stewardship and environmental concepts throughout the curriculum
in order to give the students a deeper understanding of the fragileness
of our planet and what actions they can take to preserve the resources
we have been given.
