School Uniform Dress Code:

St. Mary of the Lake School requires K-8 students to wear a uniform. It is a visual sign of our school community. It shows respect for authority and order as well as the idea of basic equality in the eyes of God. St. Mary of the Lake students wear a uniform in a manner that reflects both pride in themselves and their school.

General Guidelines for Appearance:

  • All students (K-8) must have shirts tucked in at all times.

  • Clothing must be size appropriate.

  • Cargo or flare pants are not acceptable.

  • Walking shorts fall just above the kneecap.

  • Shorts may be worn weather permitting in September, October, April, May, June.
  • No unnatural/dyed hair colors.

  • Boys hair should have no tails or draw undo attention.

  • Attire worn on non-uniform days should be void of inappropriate logos or terms and neat in appearance.

  • Make-up, which draws undo attention or is considered to be distracting, is not permitted.

  • Tattoos and body piercing (other than ears) are prohibited.

Students are expected to be in uniform according to the guidelines. Please do not consider your child an exception. Students not in proper uniform attire will be told that they are not in uniform and a formal notice will be sent to parents. Students, who repeatedly ignore uniform policy, will be given appropriate items to wear from the school clothing closet.

Infraction Policy: Parents are expected to uphold the school uniform policy. Please do not consider your child an exception. When a student is not in proper uniform attire the following process will take place:

First Offense: The teacher sends home an Out of Uniform Notification form identifying the uniform infraction. This form must be signed by the parent and student and returned to school the following day.

Second Offense: A phone call from an administrator is made to the parents explaining the uniform infraction. Students will be required to choose proper uniform clothes from a clothing closet. A second infraction notice will be sent home and must be signed by the parent and student and returned the following day.

Third Offense: The student will be issued an after school detention. A third infraction notice will be sent home and must be signed by the parents and student and returned the following day. The teacher or administrator will determine the detention day.

Fourth Offense: The student will be sent home for the day.

Please note the changes in the Uniform Policy for the 2005-2006 school year below in red. There will be a 1 year grace period for wearing the former shirt color of light blue. Light blue shirts are acceptable for the 05-06 school year only.
